What is tallow skincare?

Tallow is rendered beef fat that can be used as a rich, nourishing base for skincare. At Petals & Prairie, we carefully render and formulate our tallow with thoughtfully selected oils and ingredients to create simple, handcrafted skincare.

Will I smell like beef?

No! Our tallow goes through a careful rendering and purification process before it ever becomes skincare. Finished products should not have a strong beefy smell. Scented products will smell like their listed fragrance, while unscented varieties have a very mild natural scent.

What’s the difference between Plain Jane and Plain Rose?

Plain Jane is our simple, no-frills, fragrance-free tallow option. Plain Rose contains rosehip oil, jojoba oil and vitamin E and is especially lovely as an everyday facial moisturizer. Neither contains added fragrance.

How much tallow should I use?

A little goes a LONG way! Start with a pea-sized amount—or even less for your face—and gently massage it into clean skin. You can always add more if your skin needs it.

Can I use tallow on my face?

Absolutely! Many of our balms can be used on both the face and body. If you’re looking specifically for facial skincare, Plain Rose is one of our favorites. Always check the ingredient list and patch test first, especially if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin.

Why does the texture sometimes vary?

That’s part of the beauty of small-batch, handcrafted skincare! Natural ingredients and temperature changes can cause slight differences in color, scent or consistency from batch to batch without affecting the product’s intended use.

What happens if my tallow melts during shipping?

Tallow naturally responds to temperature, so your balm may soften or melt while traveling during warmer weather. Don’t panic! Place it upright in a cool area until it firms back up. A melted whipped balm may lose some of its fluffy texture, but it can still be used.

How should I store my products?

Keep your products in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and excessive heat. For jars, use clean, dry hands when removing product to help maintain its quality.

Are your products safe for babies and children?

We created our Little Prairie Line with little ones in mind and intentionally keep those formulas simple. Always read the full ingredient list, patch test before regular use, and discontinue use if irritation occurs. If your child has allergies, a skin condition or other medical concerns, check with their healthcare professional before use.

What is Petal Perk?

Petal Perk is our tallow-based under-eye formula made with caffeine-infused oil, rosehip oil and vitamin E. It’s designed to moisturize and nourish the delicate skin around tired-looking eyes. Only a tiny amount is needed!

Are your products handmade?

Yes! Petals & Prairie products are handcrafted in small batches rather than mass-produced. Because of this, you may occasionally notice natural variations between batches.
